Bill Stanton

I started painting at 10 years old when I received an oil paint set for Christmas.  I sold my first painting - a scene of Portland Headlight - to my fifth-grade teacher.  I graduated from Thornton Academy in Saco and studied Architecture and Civil Engineering.  I worked in various capacities as a professional engineer, mostly in Maine, for 42 years.

Over the years, as I found time, I enrolled in art courses at nearby colleges and universities, completing a total of 33 credit hours of studio work in drawing, painting, and sculpture.  I’ve received awards in several juried art shows, including “best in show” and “peoples’ choice.”  When working on a painting, I think my background in engineering comes into play, causing me to appreciate the importance of following the principles of making a good painting:  composition, contrast, values, and color harmony.  Also, I have always had a love for the natural world.  I strive to create something beautiful and an arresting experience for the viewer that causes deep interest in the subject and the way the artist expressed his feelings about it.
